The Institute for Applied Geography was established in 1973 to serve as a research and training center for the application of geography. The academic staff of the institute is composed of professors from the Department of Geography and the Natural Science Faculty of Komazawa University and visiting scholars from other universities and institutes. The activities of the institute are financially supported by a grant from Komazawa University and by research funds provided by collaborating organizations.
The research activity of the institute concentrates on the interaction between man and his natural environment in urban and rural areas. It conducts practical research for regional planning, economic development, and environmental conservation. The institute has thus far accomplished projects affiliated with the national and local governments and has produced research documents. Studies on Population and Global Environmental Change for the Ministry of Health and Welfare (1994-1997) is an example.
The institute has promoted a variety of academic activities through its publication and preparation of overseas research reports under the auspices of the Ministry of Education. The institute's annual bulletin, Regional Views (Chiikigaku Kenkyu in Japanese), publishes the findings of the research activities contributing to the development of applied geography. Most of the articles are written in English, and many scholars at home and abroad have contributed to the bulletin since its inception in 1988. In the interest of promoting international academic exchange, it is sent to major universities, research institutes and libraries throughout the world.
The institute also actively endeavors to provide the general public with an opportunity to update its knowledge of geography through open seminars.
